An Update from PADUG

Dear PADUG Colleagues,

Earlier this year, we sent an urgent message to the community regarding changes in the PADUG Planning Committee, as well as need for more involvement from the community as a whole.  Since that time, the committee has met several times to discuss the response and our options going forward.  Unfortunately, the results showed that most, if not all, volunteers who have devoted their time in the past are overwhelmed with current responsibilities.  In addition, members who attended previously are equally busy and unable to contribute more to the community and the conference.

Despite all this, we had hoped to still try to make the conference work.  However, because of the resignation of our treasurer we were faced with additional issues.  We now also needed to secure a new place to host and manage funds, as well as new technology to manage registrations and payments, all before registration was due to open this month.  Unfortunately, with that added, urgent complication we came to the conclusion that PADUG as it is now is unable to continue operations and must disband.  We simply do not have the resources to go forward.

As part of the disbanding process, the committee has decided to donate any funds remaining in the PADUG account to charities in order to pay forward the generosity of its members.  The group evaluated several charities and voted to determine the beneficiaries.  At this point we have decided to divide the funds among the following two organizations, both of which strive to help save children’s lives and to further research efforts.

The Children’s Heart Foundation
The Children's Heart Foundation (CHF) was founded in 1996 and is the country's leading organization solely dedicated to funding Congenital Heart Defect (CHD) research. The mission of CHF is to fund the most promising research to advance the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of CHDs.

St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital
The mission of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is to advance cures, and means of prevention, for pediatric catastrophic diseases through research and treatment. Consistent with the vision of our founder Danny Thomas, no child is denied treatment based on race, religion or a family's ability to pay.

The committee is greatly saddened to come to the decision to disband, but have not found any viable alternatives through our many discussions.  We have valued all that the community has contributed to our organization over the years, and will miss the collaboration that the conference has afforded us.  We wish the best to all of the members, and hope to work with you all in the future.

Sincerely,

The PADUG Planning Committee
